On 10 September 2026, the first of Age Concern Wellington Region’s 50th anniversary celebrations was held at Government House, bringing together volunteers, staff, clients, funders, partners, past and present board members and supporters.
The event was hosted by the Governor General, Dame Cindy Kiro and Dr Richard Davies. In her address, Dame Cindy Kiro highlighted the importance of older people feeling seen, heard and connected, praising Age Concern’s 50 years of helping seniors maintain their independence, dignity and sense of belonging.
“Over the past 50 years, your staff, volunteers, board members, and supporters have helped older people across this region to remain connected and involved, while never losing sight of their independence, individuality, and sense of self,” Dame Cindy said.
In his speech, our Chief Executive, Stephen Opie, reflected on the organisation’s beginnings in 1976, when representatives from government, councils and voluntary organisations came together to establish the Wellington Old People’s Welfare Council. Fifty years later, Age Concern continues its original mission of supporting older people across the region.

The celebration also highlighted our A Century of Stories project, capturing the experiences of 32 centenarians for a future book and exhibition. Stephen described the project as a way of preserving their wisdom and creating stronger connections between generations.

Guests were joined by some of the stars of the project, four centenarians and one very nearly centenarian, who all had the privilege of meeting Dame Cindy and Dr Davies in the Liverpool Room (photo above).
Age Concern Wellington are hosting a further celebration with members of the public on 15 October, 10am – 1pm at Te Matapihi Ki Te Ao Nui Wellington Library.
