1 October is International Day of Older Persons; a global celebration that we are joining to shine a spotlight on the important role older people play in our communities and recognise the insights, experience, skills and contributions of older people are valuable at every age and in every workplace.

The UN theme for this year is ‘The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives”.

Be part of the action

Join us as we amplify the voices of older people in New Zealand, challenge ageism and stereotypes and reach more people with trusted information.

There are lots of ways you can be a part of the action and celebrations, from showing older people how much you value their uniqueness, experience and ideas, finding out what events are on at your local Age Concern and/or to fundraising to support our work. Here are some ideas:

  • Challenge ageism assumption – become an Age Concern advocate and fight against ageism
  • Tell your story with your friends about an older people who has influenced or inspired you. We’d love to hear stories on social media, so make sure to tag us @AgeConcernNewZealand. If you’d like to use graphics to support your posts, print out posters, or add information in your newsletters/emails, you are welcome to download our campaign toolkit here
  • Share a meal, visit, or phone call with an older person to stay connected or thank an older person in your community
  • Let others know about Age Concern New Zealand and the trusted information and services they can find right here – on our brand new website!
