Sexual Violence Legislation Bill

Age Concern New Zealand believes all sexual violence is unacceptable. Sexual violence is a violation of human rights and results in physical, emotional and psychological harm, as well as a loss of dignity and respect. We welcome the move to give the victims of sexual violence a stronger voice. In particular, we support the proposed strategies to reduce re-traumatisation of sexual violence victims during court proceedings.

We support the right of victims of sexual violence to choose how they give evidence in court hearings. The court system and all personnel working with victims of sexual violence must respect their rights, protect their dignity and be inspired by their courage in coming forward.
