New Zealand Public Health and Disability Amendment Bill

Age Concern New Zealand welcomes the opportunity to submit on the New Zealand Public Health and Disability Amendment Bill. The proposed amendment follows extensive earlier discussions and research in which we have been involved as a member of the Carers Coalition. Age Concern New Zealand does however want to register our support for the repeal of Part 4A (Family Care Policies). We value this further opportunity to comment on legislation that will impact significantly on many New Zealanders.

The Repeal of Part 4A will respect and protect the rights of family members who are carers and family members with special care needs, such as those relating to disability, long term chronic illnesses, mental health and addiction, and aged care needs.

Family are the most ideal option to provide care in the first instance. Family members deserve to be respected and valued for the role they play as carers. They must be eligible for payment for the care they provide to family members with special care needs.
