Through her team’s research, Dr Sharmin Bala will share the impact of Covid-19 on the health and psychosocial wellbeing of older adults living in aged residential care in New Zealand.
Dr Bala aims to create an awareness of the health and wellbeing of the indigenous population living in aged residential care (ARC), using the national comprehensive International Resident Assessment instrument (interRAI).
interRAI assessments are performed by trained healthcare professionals and have the potential to provide valid clinical, social, and functional information. Overall, Māori and Pacific populations living in ARC during the first COVID-19 lockdown appeared less physically and cognitively frail than those in the pre-COVID-19 comparison group. Reduced social contact during lockdown did not appear to impact the health and psychosocial well-being of Māori and Pacific ARC populations negatively.
