Jim is with the Ministry of Health and is Manager, Healthy Ageing Policy, in the Ministry’s Strategy and Policy Business Unit. He heads the Ministry’s policy work in relation to the health of older people and has been in this role for a bit over 4 years.
Jim has a long history in public health and social sector strategy, policy and operational roles, primarily around services that respond to the needs and desires of people with disabilities and older people. He is strongly committed to collaboration and has worked closely with the NGO sector to improve the ways in which government agencies interact with NGO’s to collectively address health and social needs. He has also served time doing strategy, policy and operational work in the natural resource sector,
During 2015 and 2016, Jim and his team - along with a cast of thousands – led the development of a new Strategy to ensure the health and social sectors are able to meet the future health and support needs of NZ’s growing older population. The Healthy Ageing Strategy was launched in December 2016. Jim’s time since has been dedicated to finalising an implementation plan for the Strategy (completed in May 2017). Currently, with district health board colleagues, Jim is leading a priority action to collaboratively develop models of care for home and community support services that address future needs of older New Zealanders in sustainable ways. He regards the opportunities to contribute to initiatives that seek to improve the health and wellbeing of older New Zealanders as a privilege.
