Desigin Thulkanam

Manager, Policy and Health Promotion, Age Concern New Zealand

Desigin leads Age Concern New Zealand’s Policy and Health Promotion portfolios. With a background in human rights and participatory development, Desigin’s work seeks to ensure that older New Zealanders are treated with respect and dignity. This means that older people can live lives that are free from want, healthy, meaningful, valued and connected with their community.

Starting at Age Concern New Zealand in 2016, Desigin has lead the national development of Steady As You Go (SAYGo) Programme as part of his work in health promotion. SAYGo is a community-based strength and balance programme, which has shown to deliver health and social improvements for an older person. The programme was developed by Age Concern Otago and has run for over ten years. Age Concern New Zealand has worked closely with colleagues from Age Concern Otago and Otago University in seeking improvements and ensuring that the quality of the SAYGo Programme is maintained.

As part of his work on improving well-being for older people, Desigin has developed an interest in older workers, who work in paid and unpaid work. There is much potential that older workers can deliver to their community and local economy through skills, knowledge and experience. Being an older worker can have significant personal benefits.

Desigin looks forward to engaging with you on these how we can maximizing the potential of older workers and on the Steady As You Go Programme.
