Wellbeing story

Making connections

Volunteers who drive our vans on various excursions often create special relationships with the older people they are transporting.

One volunteer found out that like him, Ken was formerly in the New Zealand Royal Air Force (NZRAF). He now picks Ken up and takes him to the monthly ex-NZRAF dinner held at the RSA. Until our volunteer offered to drive him, there had been no way Ken could attend.

Another time, our volunteer found out that Neville had been in the Royal Navy – as had he. Now he takes Neville to the RSA on a Saturday night for dinner. Apart from attending our Age Concern activities, Neville was quite socially isolated. But the friendship he has formed with our volunteer has given him greater social connections.
